Checks that are more than six months old are called “stale checks”. A financial institution may choose to honor such a check and different states have different requirements, but federal law does not require to do so. (Source: CFPB)
To assist with stale dated checks, the Controller’s Office has two options.
- Reissue the check
- Revalidating the check.
In either case, contact the University Controller’s Office,
- Accounts Payable Manager related to vendor or travel reimbursement checks, or
- University Payroll Office, Payroll Supervisor regarding payroll checks.
