Can a student be paid an honorarium?

An honorarium is a monetary token of appreciation in lieu of payment for services when propriety forbids the setting of a fee. In other words, the university requests a service from an individual and the university sets the fee for the services received.

If a student is providing services to a department and the department is setting the fee, it would be appropriate to provide an honorarium. An extra review must be provided when a student is also an employee since employees cannot receive honorariums.

Please review the Honorariums help document, which provides information on honorarium processing. The Honorarium – Payment Request Memo template is used to request an honorarium payment.
